Ubiquitous Healthcare Forum Opens To Great Applomb GE Healthcare is proud to participate in the recent launch of the Ubiquitous Health Forum 2009 as a Gold Sponsor – A multi-region event that brings together leading healthcare companies as well as policy makers from across the Asia Pacific to usher the future of healthcare into an era of widespread connectivity and accessibility, Ubiquitous Health Forum 2009 is a forward-looking initiative that will move healthcare delivery models today away from passive reactivity into a dynamic responsive system that is easily accessible by both physicians and patients alike.

As part of its inaugural launch, Ubiquitous Health Forum 2009 took the unprecedented step of moving across the Asia Pacific from 6th October to 15th October 2009 on a country-by-country basis, bringing the Ubiquitous Health message from Malaysia to Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea and Australia.

Ubiquitous Health Forum 2009 further featured VIP speakers such as Marc Probst, CIO of Intermountain Healthcare and member of the HIT Policy Committee, a US-based Federal advisory body that was formed to spearhead American healthcare policy formulation, as well as other prominent guests, including Blair Butterfield, Vice President, Connectivity Solutions, GE Healthcare; Alex Kim, Associate Director Health, Industry Insights Asia/Pacific; and Steven Yeo, Vice President and Executive Director, Asia Pacific, HIMSS.

In all, Ubiquitous Health Forum 2009, which featured events such as technology showcases, roundtable discussions and prominent presentations, saw a turnout of more than 1000 attendees, including notable government officials, healthcare professionals and CIOs of leading healthcare organisations from across 5 countries, marking not only a successful debut but also the start of the next stage in the continual evolution of healthcare.

Cover Story IFEZ•GE Healthcare•BRC Join Hands to Establish ‘GE Global Ubiquitous Health Research and Development Center’ Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), GE Healthcare and Bio Research Complex (BRC) announced today the signing of a five year, US$41.3 million investment for the establishment of the “GE Global Ubiquitous Health Research and Development Center” (GE Global u-Health R&D Center).

The facility will develop advanced healthcare IT solutions. Each new solution will utlilize the latest advances in applied research technologies, aimed at creating significant cost reductions through the reduction of medical errors and adverse drug reactions. Incheon will not only be the home of the new facility, but the beneficiary of the research and development outcomes. Each will be deployed in the unique free economic zone, as part of the agreement. The Korean government and IFEZ see the establishment of the center as an opportunity to gain advanced clinical knowledge, nurture professional talents and create jobs through healthcare IT, which is a mainstream green industry. Also, the facilitation of convergence between healthcare core technologies and related industries will contribute to adding values and galvanizing the domestic IT industry.

Vishal Wanchoo, president and CEO of GE Healthcare IT commented, “The Korean government’s active support and the optimal conditions of IFEZ as a living laboratory test bed for u-health related research and development played heavily into our decision to participate. We’re excited to work toward the seemingly infinite possibilities ahead.”

“Our healthcare IT technology and products will play a pivotal role in driving healthymagination, GE’s initiative to improve global health through cost savings and improvements to access and quality of care,” said Karim Karti, president and CEO of GE Healthcare Korea. “We expecr this agreement can propelKorea’s overall healthcare IT industry including u-health, acting as a catalyst for professional relationships and job creation..”

“The combination of our achievement in the analysis of Korean gene information and GE Healthcare’s state-of-the-art healthcare IT solutions will eventually allow personalized healthcare service that reflects an individual’s genetic makeup,” said Uhn Lee, President of BRC. “When an individual’s gene and disease information is used as part of his or her health management,” Lee added, “it will someday help us provide accurate diagnosis and effective treatment even before the actual onset of a disease.”

In 2007, GE Healthcare established its first Asia EHR (electronic health records) R&D Center in Korea. Its skilled researchers, clinical expertise and technology will be added a solid base to a successful research and operation of GE Global u-Health R&D Center.
