AUSTRALIA: Medica Centre Inks Centricity® Deal With GE Healthcare GE Healthcare is proud to announce that Medica Centre entered into a 15 year partnership deal that will set a significant milestone for Australia and New Zealand’s healthcare IT industry.

With this partnership, the 35-bed multi-disciplinary Medica Center, which is due to open in the late 2010, and will be the first of a number of Greenfield Day Surgery Hospitals that aim to conduct over 30,000 surgical procedures per year, will become a complete digital hospital from initial admission through to discharge and billing

According to Michael McGrath co-founder at the Cortez Group, the developers behind Medica Centre, more than 30,000 surgical procedures are expected to be conducted each year at the new 35-bed centre.

The concept is known as ‘the hospital without beds’ where patients once ambulated will be discharged to their home and followed by comprehensive home nursing services. This includes physiotherapy, meals and other support services. This model has significant advantages, as the cost is less expensive than a traditional extended acute hospital stay and studies have demonstrated that many patients recover more quickly in their own home.

“The Medica Centre at Hurstville will be first in a number of greenfield day surgery hospitals and it is the first in Australia to be a completely digital hospital from a patient’s initial admission through to discharge and billing,” Mr McGrath said.

“By providing this type of centre which will accommodate a range of specialists and services in the one building, we aim to reduce some of the stress that many patients experience at a time when they are dealing with health concerns such as cancer and surgery,” he said.

“So often people are concerned about how they will get to their specialist’s appointment, where will they park, where will they go to get their CT scan or pathology done, and how long will they have to wait for the results,” he said.

Mr McGrath said that by installing the latest integrated IT network throughout the centre, a patient’s radiology images and pathology results will be able to accessed and read quickly by their treating specialist/s and medical team.

GE Healthcare’s Centricity Solution is a powerful suite of products designed to promote patient safety and drive improved patient care. It uses secure, state-of-the-art technology and will connect a patient’s team of healthcare providers, including GPs and specialists, allowing them to see and make decisions more quickly on patient data and results.

The centre will also use Centricity®’s integrated Perioperative and Anaesthesia software to all of the onsite surgical procedures. Developed by an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, healthcare specialists and IT experts, the system promotes patient safety and quality of care by making critical information easily available to all members of the care team when and where they need it.

Medica Centre in Hurstville will be the first hospital site in Australia and New Zealand to use this type of system that will digitally manage all information generated by hospital operations to the point where patient paper records are virtually eliminated
